Catoctin Creek Competition

As part of the UK launch of their Roundstone Rye whisky range, we’re delighted to announce that we’re teaming up with the North Virginia based Catoctin Creek Distilling Company, to give one of our followers the chance of winning a bottle of their Roundstone Rye Distiller's Edition 92 Proof.

The Catoctin Creek Distilling Company, which was founded by husband and wife Scott and Becky Harris in 2009, is the first legal distillery in Loudoun County to open since Prohibition and is said to respect its history by using pre-Prohibition methods to create their award winning Roundstone Rye.

Roundstone Rye Distiller's Edition 92 Proof, which is one of three expressions in the range to launch in the UK, alongside their 80 Proof and Cask Proof bottlings, is the result of several year of planning, and is produced in small batches using only one in every ten barrels.

Catoctin Creek, is also inviting those not taking part in Dry January to join them to celebrate the inaugural #RyeJanuary to mark the UK launch and their strong links to Prohibition. Throughout the month consumers are invited to a virtual Virginia via the Catoctin Creek website, through specially filmed guided tastings, a potted history of Virginia, Rye, Prohibition and a virtual tour of the distillery.

For your chance to win a bottle of Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye Distiller's Edition 92 Proof click here to email us with your contact details and date of birth, along with the phrase that dramming pays:

“I’m looking for some seriously
good, good, good, good
Rye January Rye-brations,
with a cracker from Catoctin Creek"

Quick Fire Whisky Tasting Notes

Kyrö Malt Rye Whisky
Finnish Whisky
47.2% ABV

Nose: A baked bounty of alluring aromas, led by a fresh out of the oven rye loaf, warm treacle tart and an assortment of Danish pastries and pain aux raisins. The nasal niceties continue in abundance with vanilla fudge, butterscotch, honey, heather, mixed spice, dried prunes, grilled peaches, maraschino cherries, orange marmalade, pink marshmallows, chocolate covered coffee beans, white pepper, wood spice and a tease of window putty.

Palate: The rye-brations keep on coming, this time of the toasted bread variety, smeared with orange marmalade, followed by ginger nut biscuits, toffee popcorn, along with a bread and butter pudding bursting with sultanas, demerara sugar and vanilla custard. The palatable sensory story goes on further to deliver freshly brewed coffee topped with a splash of evaporated milk, blueberry yogurt, cherry cough drops, dark chocolate, mixed spice, anise, black pepper and oodles of opulent oak.

Finish: A reassuringly rich and rounded finish, that continues to reward the palate long after the final sip.

Summary: As a huge rye whisky fan this latest release from the Kyrö Distillery in Finland, ticks all the right boxes. Not only does it deliver a beautiful balance of all things sweet and spiced, it’s gloriously gutsy and giving but without ever being too garish. In addition to being a superb solo sipper, it also just happens to make for an epic Old Fashioned!
