Quick Fire Whisky Tasting Notes

Kyrö Malt Rye Whisky
Finnish Whisky
47.2% ABV

Nose: A baked bounty of alluring aromas, led by a fresh out of the oven rye loaf, warm treacle tart and an assortment of Danish pastries and pain aux raisins. The nasal niceties continue in abundance with vanilla fudge, butterscotch, honey, heather, mixed spice, dried prunes, grilled peaches, maraschino cherries, orange marmalade, pink marshmallows, chocolate covered coffee beans, white pepper, wood spice and a tease of window putty.

Palate: The rye-brations keep on coming, this time of the toasted bread variety, smeared with orange marmalade, followed by ginger nut biscuits, toffee popcorn, along with a bread and butter pudding bursting with sultanas, demerara sugar and vanilla custard. The palatable sensory story goes on further to deliver freshly brewed coffee topped with a splash of evaporated milk, blueberry yogurt, cherry cough drops, dark chocolate, mixed spice, anise, black pepper and oodles of opulent oak.

Finish: A reassuringly rich and rounded finish, that continues to reward the palate long after the final sip.

Summary: As a huge rye whisky fan this latest release from the Kyrö Distillery in Finland, ticks all the right boxes. Not only does it deliver a beautiful balance of all things sweet and spiced, it’s gloriously gutsy and giving but without ever being too garish. In addition to being a superb solo sipper, it also just happens to make for an epic Old Fashioned!
