How long have you been working in the whisky industry?
I joined the Bushmills team in 2004 and since then have spent over 19 years honing my craft, fascinated by the maturation phase of the whiskey-making process. It was such a privilege to be appointed Master Blender in 2021.

The craftmanship and passion that goes into Bushmills is something that has truly captured my imagination. Whiskey fans know Bushmills for its four centuries of quality and taste, and part of my job is ensuring that we continue to meet that high standard.

I will be celebrating my 20th year working at Bushmills this April, which is a huge milestone for me.

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?
My biggest highlight to date was becoming the Bushmills Master Blender and seeing my name on the bottle for the first time.  I am immensely proud of the worldwide appreciation of our triple-distilled Irish whiskeys, and I look forward to leaving my own mark on the enduring legacy we have built.

The Old Bushmills Distillery is a very special place, and every day I get to explore my passion to develop new whiskeys and experiment with different casks and flavours.

Can you remember your first dram, and indeed what it was?
Of course, I remember like it was yesterday. When I was old enough, my dad introduced me to a personal favourite of his, Bushmills Black Bush.

Quick Fire Rum Tasting Notes

R. L. Seale's 10 Year Old
Single Traditional Blended Barbados Rum
46% ABV / RRP: £49.00


Nose: A fine fruitopian frenzy of toffee apples, baked peaches, Seville oranges, sultanas, maraschino cherries and dried banana chips. Followed by notes of dark chocolate coated coffee beans, salted walnuts, Caribbean spiced bun, Bakewell tart and buttered popcorn. The nasal niceties keep on giving with aniseed twists, cream soda, molasses, mixed spice, a pinch of cayenne pepper and oodles of opulent oak.

Palate: Spiced baked apples, strawberry tarts, dark orange marmalade, baked peaches, Cantaloupe melon and stewed dried fruits lead the palatable charge. Followed by notes of salted caramel, sugared almonds, cream soda, molasses, tobacco leaf, clove, ginger, nutmeg, dried red chillis, ground black pepper, charred oak and a teeming throng of tea tannins. 

Finish: A fabulous full-on flavoured finish, that lingers on, and on, and on…

Summary: Rich rounded and beautifully balanced, R L Seale 10 Year Old is an exemplary example of the passion led processes and bang on the money cask management that the Barbados based Foursquare Distillery is famous for. Bursting with flavour and exuding a wealth of nuances and complexities, it also just happens to make for the perfect whisky drinkers rum!

We’re absolutely thrilled to announce that on March 20th, we’ll be teaming up again with our good friends at the Isle of Skye based Torabhaig Distillery, for an exclusive first taste of the third chapter in their Legacy Series, ahead of its Global launch.

The Torabhaig Distillery, which is owned by Mossburn Distillers, is the second ever licenced single malt Scotch whisky distillery on the Isle of Skye. It started production in January 2017, with a local team of nine distillers, many new to the industry. The distillery is said to be a true product of its surroundings and heritage, shaped by the wild landscape and the climate of Isle of Skye.
